IVF: In Vitro Fertilization

In order to achieve pregnancy and the birth of a healthy child, we are relying on state-of-the-art methods such as in vitro fertilization using the IMSI procedure (Intra-cytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection), blastocyst culture, embryo selection and numerous other IVF techniques.

Details on In Vitro Fertilization at our IVF center

The IVF procedure in a nutshell: In the laboratory of the IVF center, ova and spermatozoa are brought together in a test tube ("in vitro") or, to be more precise, in a petri dish. In order to create excellent conditions for in vitro fertilization, the selection of suitable sperm is performed by means of a high-resolution microscope. The best sperm are isolated and then injected into the oocyte. After fertilization, the embryos are kept in culture to grow to the blastocyst stage (embryo with a complex structure consisting of 200 cells) within 5 days. Subsequently, they can be transferred to the uterus. The amount of treatment costs depends on the individual situation - we will be pleased to advise you on financial opportunities that are available to you as well as on possible coverage from the statutory health insurances.

Intra-Cytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection

Since the cause of infertility may be related to both male factor problems and female factor problems, we, at our IVF center, do not only strengthen the collected oocytes by keeping them in nutrient media, but we also use the so-called IMSI procedure (Intra-Cytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection): With this technique, we are able to assess sperm quality on the basis of microscopic analyses and select the most suitable spermatozoa in terms of their fertilization capacity. This provides us with a promising screening method to select the best sperm for microinjection.

Blastocyst Culture modeled on Nature

At the IVF center in Salzburg, the in vitro fertilization procedure resembles closely that of the natural process: On average, a fertilized oocyte needs five days to travel from the ovary to the uterus. At our IVF center, the development of the fertilized oocyte up to the blastocyst stage takes place in in vitro culture. Thanks to the progress made in modern reproductive medicine, we know which requirements need to be met with regard to the nutrient medium in order to provide for optimal embryo development.

Final Step before the Embryo Transfer: Blastocyst Selection

Blastocyst culture is followed by the selection of developed cells in order to identify the best embryos to be transferred in the course of an in vitro fertilization treatment in Austria. This is why, at our center in Salzburg, all oocytes that have been fertilized are kept in culture: We choose those blastocysts that are most likely to produce a pregnancy and make your desire to have a baby come true. After having transferred one to a maximum of two embryos at the blastocyst stage, the aim is to freeze (vitrification) the remaining embryos with a view to possible future pregnancies.

The way to your own child

In Vitro Fertilization (Artificial Insemination)

As different as the causes for unwanted childlessness may be, the assisted reproductive technologies that are available today are showing great promise.

Fertility Preservation

Preserving female fertility and postponing motherhood until later in life: fertility preservation in modern reproductive medicine puts fertility on hold, i.e. have your oocytes or sperm frozen and subsequently stored for a certain time at your own request.

Advice on how to optimize the Chances of Pregnancy

A thorough clarification of the relevant medical results of both partners enables the specialists of the IVF Centers Prof. Zech to determine a therapy which is tailored to the patients' individual needs. In doing so, we will increase the chances of achieving pregnancy as early as in "the first cycle".

Consultation at the right time

Increasing age is a decisive factor for the decline in both female and male fertility. For instance, a finite number of oocytes are present in a woman from birth.

Therefore, results-oriented advice at an early stage is of key importance when dealing with unwanted childlessness. Even short delays (months or even days) may influence the chances of getting pregnant. The experience drawn from more than three decades of reproductive medicine makes us your ideal contact when it comes to fertility treatment.
